Rules for visitors

The walk along the tourist route, which consisting of 20 monumental chambers joined by 2 kilometres of pathways and an underground salt mining exhibition of the Muzeum Żup Krakowskich located on Level III, takes about 3 hours.

Visitors enter the Mine descending a 380-step staircase to Level I (64 metres underground).

Tourists return to the surface in a  lift in the Daniłowicz Shaft, from Level III (135 metres underground).

The temperature in the Mine, though constant, is low (14oC i.e. 57.2F). That is why even in summer, warm clothes should be worn.

Smoking and using any sources of open fire is strictly forbidden in the Mine. Using electric torches is not allowed either.

The organisation of tourist traffic may change in exceptional cases, e.g. mining works.

Note!

The organisation of tourist traffic may change and some chambers may be closed to tourists due to exceptional situations such as mining works or unexpected visits.

Handicapped in the mine

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is also handicap accessible. The various venues along the tourist route are accessible to the physically challenged depending  on their degree of handicap. The possibility of visiting the mine by the physically challenged is regulated by Poland’s Mining Law, and in particular, the obligation to guarantee safety to all individuals present in the mine.

Booking is obligatory so that wheelchair users may be ensured comfortable touring, and also to minimise the waiting time before going underground (phone +48 12 278 73 02, +48 12 278 73 66, e-mail: turystyka@kopalnia.pl).

Due to increased tourist traffic in the summer season (April 1 - October 31), we strongly encourage our Guests to visit the Mine in the morning (7-8 a.m.) or in the evening (6-7 p.m.) Outside the summer season, you can book your tour between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

We encourage you to visit the mine in autumn or winter, when the number of tourists is smaller and you will be able to enjoy the visit more.
